Without Focus There is No Flow
In today's world, it's nearly impossible to start a task without being constantly interrupted. With text messages, emails, and notifications demanding our attention, the amount of distractions we face puts us in a constant state of multitasking. However, research has shown that only 2% of the population can effectively multitask. In fact, our brains are not wired to focus on two tasks at once. Every time we switch between tasks, our minds use up mental energy and time to make the switch. This depletes our energy and time in a negative way and risks burnout from multitasking exhaustion.
When our brains enter a state of flow, we create an environment that is the polar opposite of the multitasking depletion we often experience. This state occurs when we become fully absorbed in a task, resulting in heightened energy, intense focus, and complete immersion. Known as "being in the zone," achieving flow state is a powerful way to increase productivity and concentration.
To minimize multitasking and create more opportunities for flow in your life, try implementing these three tips:
Schedule and block time for the work: Block off time on your calendar and snooze notifications on your computer and phone to create an environment for focus. Let your team know you have focus time scheduled so they don't expect an immediate response during that time.
Create a clear goal before getting started: Knowing what you need to accomplish is key to getting it done.
Turn the task into a game: Create your own rules, set a time limit, increase the level of challenge, and skills required. Completion of the task delivers an immediate reward.
The Importance of Flow States in Productivity
Flow states can't be coerced. They only arise when we feel enthusiastic and invested in the work, with an intrinsic drive to complete the task. It's not always possible for every task to meet the requirements needed to reach a flow state. However, the more we have opportunities to complete tasks that put us in that state, the more rewarding we will find the work and the process.
Achieving Focus: Dealing with Unchallenging Tasks
It's inevitable that sometimes you'll come across tasks that don't require your full skill set and can't get you to that perfect flow state. However, even in such situations, avoiding multitasking and minimizing distractions by snoozing notifications can give you more time to concentrate on the task at hand.
